The term “diva” has evolved over time and has been given various definitions; however, one common factor exists amidst all these meanings: “woman”. Originally, “diva” means a renowned female songster; someone that exudes exceptional talent as regards to singing, theatre, film or even today’s pop music culture. It originated from an Italian noun “diva” which means, a lady deity.

Today, the word is not limited to all these definitions. In fact, it is often used in reference to a woman who projects talent, independence and power. So does this mean that anybody can be a diva? Well the answer would be a big yes! However, there is an underlying responsibility that comes with such title.

Marilyn Monroe, despite her short-lived fame (she passed away at the young age of 36), is continually inspiring many women of today from all age groups. She was a fashion icon, a beauty ambassadress, a pop icon and a sex symbol – all these have become part the brand that she had fashioned for herself. Lady Gaga is among Forbes’ most famous women in the world. Her attributes – a bizarre taste for fashion, a unique voice, and an uncanny personality has earned herself a remarkable brand that people recognize and idolize.

It fascinates me how women, both from the past and today, fare to craft a name for themselves. They worship other women and yet they succeed in making their image impressively unique; something that speaks of women’s pronounced creativity. Marilyn, Princess D and Lady Gaga may come from different generations of women but their brands have spoken of the same thing: women are able – able to make possibilities happen, able to stand out and able to shine.

We all dream of becoming someone that inspires others. We work on making ourselves beautiful with the hope of inspiring other women. We all want to be divas in our own right. However, for you to become an equitable diva, you need to stand out among many others; otherwise, there wouldn’t be something special and worth diva-ish about you. And for this to happen, you need to be unique; what is it about you that makes you different from the others? What is your BRAND?
